Summary:
When bears are found dead in Norway, the students of the Volda University Thomas, Johanna and the cameraman Kalle decide to investigate. They stalk the trailer of the mysterious hunter Hans expecting to find an explanation for the killings. The reluctant Hans tries to flee from the youngsters, but he agrees that they film him in action provided they follow his orders. Soon the trio of students learns that Hans is actually a troll hunter that works for a secret government agency. Further, several dangerous trolls have escaped from their territory and Hans is assigned to eliminate them.
Trollhunter is a Norwegian found footage film that follows a group of college kids trying to uncover illegal bear hunters, but who instead find a whole department of the government that hunts and corrals Trolls.
The hunter they had been following, Hans, reveals that Trolls have existed as long as humans, if not longer, and for centuries people like him have been hired to make sure the Trolls stay in their territories and keep them from being discovered by the public. Tired by this job, Hans has agreed to let the students film him and his actions to finally show the world that Trolls do exist and that it’s time they deal with it. Some Trolls have gone rogue, and Hans fears what this means for the human race.
I’ve always enjoyed Foreign films, and the fact this movie was subtitled didn’t deter me from watching. I found the fact that this took place in another country other than my own to added to the fascinating storyline of it. Fear is universal, and is not isolated solely to America. Plus it is made by one of my favorite film companies: Magnet Releasing.
The special effects were brilliant in this movie, the Trolls actually looking realistic. In most found footage films the special effects are sub-par, but in Trollhunter I found them to be masterfully done. I actually believed these people were filming Trolls! It was fantastic, and was an added bonus to the already interesting plot. The dialogue was also spot-on, at times humorous and at other times tense. The film deploys a blend of comedy and horror, with the terrifying visuals and thrilling chases taking precedence but intertwined with quirky quips and exploding outbursts of disbelief at the increasingly dangerous situations they were getting involved in.
The end to this movie was shocking and the scenes leading up to it were thrilling and chilling. I was on the edge of my seat watching the last half hour of this movie, and when it was done I could do nothing more than just stare in awe at the credits as they scrolled by.
This was a truly magnificent film and I recommend it to everyone who doesn’t mind Foreign horror films. I certainly don’t, and I advise you to give this movie a chance! It didn’t land on #8 of my Found Footage Movie List for nothing!
