Summary:
A likeable young man despite his depressive disposition, Zia puts blade to wrist only to find that the pain of life doesn’t end with the coming of death. Now trapped in a bleak metaphysical landscape populated entirely by suicide victims blearily searching for the joys that eluded them in the physical realm, Zia soon learns that the love is one of the latest arrivals in the dreary land of the dead. As Zia sets out to locate his ill-fated former companion and experience the joys that eluded the couple in life, he is joined in his quest by a lovelorn Russian rocker named Eugene and an accidental tourist named Mikal, who’s looking for a way out of the sorrowful stir.
We’ve come to the final day of my Underrated Movie Playlist, and after long speculation I can’t find any other movie that deserves the most attention than Wristcutters: A Love Story.
Based on the novella Knellers Happy Campers by Etgar Keret this movie follows Zia (Patrick Fugit), a young man who is seeking happiness in a world where such a notion is seemingly impossible. A world where the residents are people who have committed suicide and are now forced to endure the same trials of life – only a bit worse.
When Zia discovers his ex (the one who caused him to commit suicide in the first place) has killed herself as well, he takes his best friend Eugene (Shea Wigham) on a road-trip across the desert to find her. Along the way they meet Mikal (Shannyn Sossamon) who’s trying to find a way out of their dreary new world. The three unlikely friends learn along the way that just because they’re dead doesn’t mean they can’t still live.
There isn’t an accurate way to truly describe the message of this movie. It’s a black comedy of life after death and further beyond. The movie contains just the right amount of everything: comedy, romance, drama, adventure, philosophy. I’m not sure how it came to pass that this movie didn’t get as much attention as it deserves, as it truly a movie worth watching. I may say that a lot (especially on this movie list) but this movie is the one movie you should see even if you don’t watch the others.
At #1 on my Underrated Movie Playlist, Wristcutters: A Love Story teaches you that life is a precious gift that should not be squandered away for any reason.
